Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric Surgery is the specialty that is responsible for the study, diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases, congenital and acquired, of the fetus, newborn, infant, school child and adolescent, up to 18 years of age.

Pediatric Surgery can be divided into: major, minor, elective and urgent surgeries.

Major surgeries are very complex and are associated with increased risks, in addition to a longer hospitalization period. Some examples are the removal of tumors, repair of congenital heart defects, correction of skull malformations, spinal anomalies, and pulmonary and gastrointestinal physiological anomalies, among others.

Minor surgeries are procedures that allow children to return to their normal activities in less time, which means a faster recovery. They are generally outpatient procedures, for example, Biopsies, fracture correction, etc.

Emergency surgeries are typically performed after trauma or high-risk congenital heart disease. For its part, elective surgeries are those that are not necessary or that can be performed at any time, for example, Circumcision in older children.
