Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian cysts are sacs, usually filled with fluid, that form in or on the surface of an ovary. Women have two ovaries, which are located on each side of the uterus.

Each ovary is about the size and shape of an almond. The eggs develop and mature in the ovaries, and are released in monthly cycles during the fertile years.

Ovarian cysts are common. They usually cause little to no discomfort and are harmless. Most cysts go away without treatment within a few months.

However, sometimes they can become twisted or split open (rupture). This can cause serious symptoms. To protect your health, get regular pelvic exams and learn about symptoms that could indicate a potentially serious problem.
